A tyrant tells you how unfair life is so that you will surrender your liberty; a true leader opens the doors so you can choose to fly like an eagle.
History has shown to us that tyrants will always seek to curtail people's freedom with the intention (whether direct or indirect) to maintain their rule over them. Give the people some benefits and slowly clip their wings so they can no longer fly away, or think for themselves. Greater dependence on a tyrant only increases the tyrant's control over the subjects. Whatever a tyrant can give to you, he/she can just as easily take away from you, or better yet, hold it up to you and threaten to take it away unless you surrender more of your liberty.
The growth of modern day government and its role in American life is threatening our way of life and the preservation of our God-given rights to life, liberty, and however the hell we choose to live that will grant us the happiness we seek. Government wants to grow, and it can only do so at the expense of the people. Unfortunately, it has been quite successful over the years. Government has grown and has usurped people's liberty to choose how to manage their own health, how else can anyone explain the passage of Obamacare? Government has taken away parent's freedom to choose the curriculum that their children will learn and how they will be educated, example: the current state of our public education system. The American can-do attitude, which has made a huge difference around the globe, is slowly being replaced with bureaucrat incompetence, i.e. our seeming inability to drill for our own energy at huge expense to us and generations to come. There are many more examples that illustrate how the blinders of dependence and entitlement are skewing our view of liberty. While the argument is made that it's all for the people's benefit, it ultimately benefits the leftists and large government advocates by taking away the wings of the American people and their ability to think independently. The American work ethic has largely been replaced with an entitlement mentality where government is the benefactor.
We need change, alright. But the change we need is the change that our Founding Fathers envisioned before our nation was free. A vision that each person should live according to the manner they choose for themselves.
